European automotive industry needs major transformation to remain competitive

19/10/2017.

This is the conclusion of the final report of the GEAR 2030 Automotive Experts Group, presented this Wednesday in Brussels, attended by Blanca Marín, the regional secretary for Sustainable Economy, Production and Commerce representing the President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, who chairs the European Automobile Group this year.

The high-level meeting of the Group was attended by the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Elzbieta Bienkovska; the Commissioner for Mobility and Transport, Violeta Bulc; the Commissioner for the Economy and Digital Society, Mariya Gabriel; the Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella; and the representatives of the Member States of the European Union and the sector

The experts' report highlighted the structural changes that the sector in Europe will have to undergo in the coming years if it is not to be excluded from the top of technological innovation, in order to adapt its value chains, face climate change and environmental challenges, and develop new digital technologies that allow the implementation of electric and autonomous vehicles.

Marín acknowledged the importance of this report and stressed the desirability of the EU now developing a comprehensive strategy for the sector to facilitate the transition from the current model to the scenarios set out in the report. "It is key that the European Commission ensure that the recommendations contained in this report can be adopted in a coordinated and joint manner across all territories and should in turn involve increased resources from the EU".

The Generalitat has participated in the work of the GEAR 2030 High Level Expert Group on the Automotive Industry representing the Committee of the Regions, in which President Ximo Puig heads the intergroup dedicated to the future of the automotive industry in the EU.
